Andrea Henderson comes from an art enthused background and has painted in oils all her life.

 She has received the Highly Commended Award in the WA Cossack Art Award competition in 2009 and has exhibited in the former Nine by Five gallery in Fremantle.

 The oil paintings in the exhibition The Swan & Beyond display an impressive skill of different oil paint application techniques. Andrea handles the palette knife, fine brushstroke, to bold paint applications with ease.  The array of colours and high quality drawing skills create an impressive and unique style which is not often seen in modern-day galleries. The viewer will be taken on a journey of intricate bush landscape vistas, quiet Swan River bank sights and the spectacular vibrancy of iris and red nasturtiums flowers

Stockroom is a collection of works by some of the  artists that have successfully exhibited at Monart Studio Gallery. One of these artists is Trish Lundberg who exhibited  in the Wisdom of Eve exhibition in May this year.  Trish’s paintings explore a continuation of her unique way of layering images.  The seed of inspiration for her latest work was planted in Arizona.  The dynamic energy of Landscape 2 is clearly palpable and creates a feeling of pure vibrancy.  Other works are paintings of space by Suzanne Embry, the expansive African landscapes by Jo Muir,  the Black on White paintings by Mona Ketelsen ,  three dimensional artworks by John Chescoe, oil paintings by Andrea Henderson whose palette knife techniques are intriguing, drawings by Jane Mitchell and abstract paintings by Stephany Durack .

The exhibition runs from the 7th of August until the 28th of August

David Worsley Jones studied Graphic Design at Kingston University and worked as an Art Director in London and South Africa. It was the African bush and its wildlife that inspired him to become an artist. His African watercolours and oil paintings are well known in London. David has travelled extensively and his last place of residence was Moscow, where he exhibited in the Winzavod Gallery. David’s oil paintings display a distinctive style, contrasting light and dark, fusing figures into a mass and so generating dynamic movement.

Mona Ketelsen was inspired by the statement of Marcel Proust: “The voyage of discovery is not seeking new landscape but in having new eyes”. We are always looking for new impressions, when found we often forget to see them.  Seeing promotes action and involvement.  The artist captured objects that were once someone’s vision and restored their moment of glory.

From My Point of View exhibition:

Everything we SEE around us was once a vision in the mind of its creator.

Whether in Nature or in our Man-made World, it is the vision of someone who saw the potential, the outcome, the possibility and the importance.

Someone who was able to SEE and not just LOOK.

To SEE here means to understand the deeper meaning of the object, to feel it, to think about it and respond to it. To SEE promotes action and involvement. It is the way we activate our innate perceptions and learnt experiences through our senses.

To LOOK on the other hand, means passively noticing without action, without engagement, without understanding and without involvement.

In a fast moving world dominated by visual images we have become accustomed to LOOK and to ignore our inborn ability of SEEING. Bombarded daily by millions of images, we have lost the desire to seek out the deeper meanings of things, the desire to engage. And to keep up with the fast pace of our lives, we adopted a fast way of thinking, the “Right-now” approach. This approach however reduces SEEING and observing to an act of merely LOOKING and processing.

Photography is one form of art that fell prey to the “Right-now” approach.

There is nothing easier than LOOKING through the viewfinder, pressing the button on a digital camera and PRESTO an instant result, a photograph that feeds the appetite of today’s fast thinking culture.  But is that what photography is all about?

Is Photography about LOOKING? That detached, passive and none comitial act of the individual who’s sole aim is to LOOK without understanding? That mechanical act of taking a photograph? Is it about the camera?

Or is Photography about SEEING? That act of activating the individual’s innate perceptions and learnt experiences to SEE? To understand inner meanings and to respond? The photographer.

To me Photography is about the photographer. About his understanding of and his response to his times. His vision. The way he SEES

In my work I try to SEE, to slow the pace, to understand our times through everyday mundane objects. Objects we LOOK at without SEEING. I try to put them on display to make a point that those were once someone’s vision. To give them the importance they lost in the battle of the new. To restore their moment of glory, to highlight their beauty and to portray them, as they deserve to be, works of art.

The Wisdom of Eve

“The theme of the book and the exhibition is concerned with the archetypes, symbols and language, through which ideas about women are expressed.

The book looks at the ways in which the mythologies of Sophia, Lilith and Eve have shaped and influenced attitudes towards women within western culture.

In response to these ideas Jane Mitchell depicts female figures in archetypal situations, but with plenty of opportunities for those situations to be transcended.

Stephany Durack has produced a sense of spirituality through colours, shapes, symbols and movements. Her works suggest pathways through and beyond physical boundaries.

Trish Lundberg has presented female figures merging with and emerging from different levels of reality, again pushing boundaries and challenging traditional ideas”.

Art and painting has been a lifelong form of expression for me; a constant companion to communicate all the highs and lows of life with, and in return be challenged and rewarded with a higher understanding and acceptance of myself and others.

For many years my art attempted to convey a feeling of disconnection. The subject was painted in a “cut and paste” fashion into its environment. Pushing this idea to the extreme I experimented with painting a figure in space. It was during my research on the Universe that I began to understand that all things are connected and that my original premise was misguided. To quote Albert Einstein (1954) “A human being is part of the whole called by us Universe, a part limited in time and space.”

Some of the paintings contain figures which represent a concept of life, a new being, still transparent that turns a back or flees from planet time. These paintings may be seen as life cycles. Other paintings maybe used simply for enjoyment and to reflect upon quietly.. may they reflect back all the love and happiness that went into creating them.

As I am enjoying an almost meditative experience using this more abstract technique and the vast potential for learning about life and humanity, I intend to continue painting this fascinating subject in the form of developing our interaction with the Universe. Starting with an exhibition of paintings that will hopefully convey a sense of hope, ownership, peace and empowerment...my first solo exhibition is “My Space”.
